2020 Open Enrollment for Health Coverage and Flexible Spending Accounts

Open Enrollment for health benefits and flexible spending is May 1, 2020 through May 15, 2020


Open Enrollment elections are accepted beginning May 1, 2020.  Elections are accepted through the state's EmployeeDirect until May 15, 2020 at 11:59 p.m..  If you are unable to make updates on Employee Direct you may use the State Enrollment Form (pdf). When submitting enrollment forms they must be received by Human Resources by the close of business on Friday, May 15.  

Elections will take affect on July 1, 2020 until June 30, 2021.

Premium rewards for the current plan year end in June. To earn premium rewards for the next health care plan year which is July 2020 through June 2021 employees must complete or update a health assessment on or after May 1, 2020 until May 15, 2020.

What is open enrollment?

Open enrollment is the period each year when employees can make changes to their health insurance as well as sign up for flexible spending accounts. Allowable changes to the plans include switching plans, adding/removing family members and changing the level of coverage. Decisions made during open enrollment go into effective July 1, 2020. Flexible spending accounts must be reenrolled in every year.

How can I make changes to my insurance or sign up for a flexible spending account?

To make changes, employees will use EmployeeDirect at EmployeeDirect. The 7-digit identification number used to log in is the employee’s benefits id number, which is listed on their health insurance card. Changes must be submitted by 11:59 PM on May 15, 2020. For additional help use EmployeeDirect Instructions While the online method is preferred, employees can submit a paper enrollment form to HR. These form needs to be placed in the dropbox outside of HR by 5:00PM on May 15, 2020.

What else is needed when adding a family member to the plan such as a spouse or child?

Documentation must be submitted confirming the eligibility of the family member. Required Documentation (pdf) that is required for adding a family member. To upload this documentation, please utilize the BOX link to submit supporting documentation.

What if I do not want to make any changes to my health insurance?

No action is required if you:

  • Have no health plan-related changes
  • Are not enrolling in an FSA
  • Do not plan to participate in Premium Rewards
What are premium rewards?

Premium rewards are saving in the health plan premiums for participants in the COVA Care or COVA Healthaware plans. An employee or spouse can save $17.00 per month per person by completing the premium rewards.

How do I complete the premium rewards?

Complete a health assessment between May 1 and May 15. The health assessment will be accessed on either Anthem or Aetna depending on your health care provider. Please keep a copy of your confirmation. Premium rewards have to be renewed yearly.

Where can I learn about more about the changes?

Employees were mailed the Spotlight on Your Benefits (pdf). This contains information about the plans and FSA. HR will be conducting a series of presentations through Zoom about open enrollment on May 4 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. (JOIN) and May 5 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. (JOIN). Additionally, we will be offering office hours during the week of 5/11-5/15, in which an employee can book a 15 minute meeting with a benefit specialist to discuss their specific questions. Sign up sheet will be available the soon.
